Srila Prabhupada at Jajpur Varaha Deva temple:
Journey to Jajpur:
On 23rd December 1930 AD, Tuesday, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Prabhupada, the fulfiller of Lord Chaitanya’s desires, along with his associates went to Howrah station from Sri Gaudiya Mutt in Bagbazar, Calcutta. His destination was Jajpur Varaha Deva temple, Odissa to install the footprint of Lord Chaitanya in the newly constructed temple there. From there he took the Puri passenger train at 10pm night. The next day, on December 24, after overcoming many obstacles, he finally reached Jagannath Dharamshala near Varaha Deva Temple in Jajpur, where he spent the night and took rest. The temple of Lord Varaha is located on an island between two branches of Vaitarani river, one kilometre from Jajpur bus stop and about 27 km from Jajpur station in Jajpur district of Odisha. The island is at the opposite Dashashwamedh Ghat and well known as a pilgrimage.
Visiting the newly constructed Sri Chaitanya Padapitha Temple:-
In the early morning of 25th December, Srila Prabhupada bathed in Vaitarani river and performed anhika. Then along with his associates he visited the newly built temple accompanied by khol, cymbals & sankirtan. The small temple was about 20 feet high.
Srila Prabhupada’s Tribute to Lord Varaha Deva:-
The temple of Lord Varaha Deva was earlier visited by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His intimate associates. Srila Prabhupada and his associates came here to establish the auspicious footprint of Lord Chaitanya. At first all the devotees offered dandavat obeisances at the footprint of Sri Chaitanya following Srila Prabhupada. Then they went to the temple of Lord Varaha which is at left side of the footprint temple to have the darshan of the Lord. The temple priest first garlanded Srila Prabhupada and smeared his forehead with sandalwood pulp as a prasada of Lord Varaha. Then the priest gave garlands and sandalwood pulp to other devotees also. Srila Prabhupada prostrated before Lord Varaha. Everybody followed him. Śrīla Prabhupāda gave a lecture on how Mahaprabhu danced and sang in the mood of separation in front of Varaha Deva. After that he bowed down before Varaha Deva and came back to the footprint temple.
Installation of Sri Chaitanya’s footprint by Srila Prabhupada:-
On 25th December 1930, the devotees started Sankirtan with mridanga & cymbals. When Srila Prabhupada installed Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s footprint with his own hands, the devotees from all directions raised their voices to shout the victory sound in the name of Sri Guru & Gauranga. The sound resonated the entire sky, air, valley and mountains. Srila Prabhupada himself began the installation ceremony by washing the stone-engraved footprint in Ganges water and offering Tulsi leaves, sandalwood pulp and garlands brought by the devotees. Then Srimad Bhakti Hridaya Vana Maharaj and Srimad Bhakti Rakshaka Sridhara Maharaj and other devotees offered tulsi leaves and sandalwood pulp to the footprint. After that bhogas were offered and aratrika kirtanas were sung.
Srila Prabhupada’s order for daily worship at the footprint temple:-
Srila Prabhupada ordered and authorised the local devotee Sriyukta Haribandhu Mahasaya to come daily with the urdhva puñdra on forehead and tulasi beads in neck and perform sattvika worship of the footprint by offering water, Tulasi leaves, flowers and sandalwood with Gaura Mantra.
Srila Prabhupada’s instruction to describe Mahaprabhu’s pastimes at Jajpur:
In 1511 AD, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu expressed His desire to visit Sridham Vrindavan after taking sannyasa. But being deluded by Lord Nityananda, He came to Sri Advaita Acharya’s house at Shantipur. From there He began to move towards the south with the desire to visit Nilachal. And gradually through the village of Athisara, Chhatra-bhoga and Briddha Mantreswara, He arrived at the border of Orissa. From there, He went to Khira-chora Gopinath and finally arrived at this Jajpur village in Remuna. He had the darshan of Varaha Deva here. He sang and danced in ecstasy before Lord Varaha Deva. This is described in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita:
calite calite āilā yājapura-grāma
varāha-ṭhākura dekhi’ karilā praṇāma
Translation: Walking and walking, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His party finally arrived at Yājapura, on the river Vaitaraṇī. There He saw the temple of Varāhadeva and offered His obeisances unto Him.
nṛtya-gīta kaila preme bahuta stavana
yājapure se rātri karilā yāpana
Translation: In the temple of Varāhadeva, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu engaged in chanting and dancing and offered prayers. He passed that night in the temple.
