Sri Chaitanya Matha at Sridham Mayapur, Nadiya (Origin of all Gaudiya Mathas)
Srila Prabhupada took Tridanda Sannyasa on 27th March, 1918 at Chandrasekhar Bhavan, Sri Mayapur, Navadvip. On that very day he founded Sri Chaitanya Matha. In 1926 here he built a magnificent temple with a tower of 29 heads. In this place the padapitha (emblem of lotus feet) of the spiritual master, Sri Guru- Gauranga Radha Vinoda Prana Jiu and the Acharyas of four Sattvata sampradayas are the presiding deities of this temple. The daily Nadiya Prakasha was published from here on regular basis.
Sri Yogapitha at Sridham Mayapur
Yogapitha, the birthplace of Sriman Mahaprabhu was established by Thakura Bhaktivinoda in 1893. The presiding deities are: Sri Gaura Narayana along with His two consorts, Lakshmipriya and Vishnupriya; Radha Madhava, Pancha tattva and Adhokshaja Vishnu deity (self-manifested during the excavation of the temple). The deities of Saci Mata and Jagannath Mishra with child Nimai are served in a separate small temple. Other deities are Gaura Gadadhara, Lakshmi Narasimha & Khsetrapala Shiva.
Srivasa Angana at Sridham Mayapur, Nadia:
This place is situated at 202 yards or 182 meters north from Sri Yogpeetha. This was the residence of Srivasa Pandita. He was the incarnation of Narada Muni as an associate of Sriman Mahaprabhu. Sriman Mahaprabhu introduced Sankirtana Rasa in this Srivasa Angana as Sri Krishna manifested Rasa dance in Sri Vrindavana Dham. The then governor of Nabadwip, Chand Kaji, opposed the congressional kirtan. He broke the Mrdangas of the devotees. From that time this place is called “Khola Bhangara Danga’ (the land of broken drum). In March,1921 AD Srila Prabhupada found a temple here and installed the deities. This beautiful temple has three rooms. There are the deities of Sri Gaura and Nityananda doing Sankirtana in the very first room. In the middle chamber, there is a deity of Gauranga Mahaprabhu manifesting Mahaprakasha pastime surrounded by Nityananda, Advaita, Gadadhara and Srivasa. In the third chamber Sri Sri Gaur-Radha-Gavinda Jiu are worshipped.
Shri Advaita Bhavan (Shridham Mayapur, Nadia)
District: Nadia, West Bengal (India).
This place is situated 20 yards i.e. about 18 meters north from Srivas Angan. Sri Advaita Acharya invocated Mahaprabhu to this material world by offering Ganga water and Tulsi and through His roaring call. At this place prominent Vaishnava personalities like Srila Visvarupa, Thakura Haridasa, Srivasa, Gangadasa, Shuklamvara, Chandrasekhara Acharya and Murari assembled and discussed on scriptures with each other. Srila Prabhupada founded the temple in March 1921 and installed the deities of Sri Advaita Acharya and child Nimai.
Sri Murari Gupta’s Sripata (Sridham Mayapur, Nadia)
At this place, there was the house of ‘Sri Murari Gupta’, an incarnation of Sri Hanuman as an associate of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Srila Prabhupada inaugurated the foundation for the temple on 18th March 1934 AD. When the temple was built, Srila Prabhupada installed the deities of Sri Rama-Lakshmana, Sita Devi and Sri Hanuman Ji, as They were Sri Murari Gupta Thakura’s worshippable deities on 11th March, 1935. Prabhupada arranged for daily Seva here. This place is known as Murarigupta’s Jute.
Anukula Krishna Anushilanagara (Sridham Mayapur, Nadia)
In 1936 AD, at Srivas Angan, Sridham Mayapur, Srila Prabhupada established Thakura Bhaktivinoda Research Institute i.e. Anukula Krishna Anushilanagara. At this place Srila Prabhupada explained many theological conclusions on how to attain the topmost stage of Krishna consciousness.
Sri Rudra Dvipa Gaudiya Math (Sri Rudra Dvipa, Nadia)
Earlier Rudra Dvipa was situated on the western bank of the Ganges. But due to the erosion of the Ganges, Rudra Dvipa is now situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges. Rudra Deva knew that Gaurahari would appear in Nadia in His eternal golden form. He came here and worshipped Gauranga. Sri Gaurasundara appeared before him and told him that immediately He would incarnate in Sri Mayapur and fulfill his wish. The place is named Rudra Dvipa because Sri Rudradeva worshipped Gaura here. This is the very place, where the propagator of Shudha Advaita (purified monism), Acharya Sree Vishnu Swami received the mercy of Rudra and became the Acharya of Rudra-sampradya. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Geswami Prabhupada established the Gaudiya Math at this place in 1936 AD. The deity of Gauranga Mahaprabhu that Srila Prabhupada served while performing the hundred million nama yajna, is present here. Other deities are Sri Radha Govinda and Sri Rudradeva. On 7th March, 1936, during the Navadvipa Parikrama, Srila Prabhupada installed the deities of Gaura- Radha Madhava.
Sri Jayadeva Gaudiya Mathalaya (Srinathpur, Nadia)
Ghospalli is situated on the way from Sridham Mayapur to Rudradeep. A place in front of that Ghospalli is known as Srinathpur. At this place Srila Jayadeva Goswami lived for some time with Padmavati. Srila Prabhupada inaugurated an institution in the name of Srila Jayadeva Gosvamipada at this place. It was known as Jayadeva Gaudiya Mathalaya. The institution is not extinct anymore.
Cemetery of Chand Kaji (Sri Dham Mayapur, Nadia)
During Shriman Mahaprabhu’s time, the administration of Nabadwip was in the hands of ‘Maulana Sirajuddin’. He was an employee under Hussain Shah, the then Nawab of Gauda. ‘Maulana Sirajuddin’ was also known as Chand Kaji. Chand Kaji was a staunch opponent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This Chand Kaji issued an order to stop the Sankirtan propagated Sri Chaitanyadev. He broke the Mrdangas (drums) of the devotees. But Sri Chaitanya disobeyed this rule and started sankirtan at Chand Kaji’s house followed by a large Sankirtan team. And on that day, Mahaprabhu and Chand Kaji sat together for a debate. At the end Chand Kaji became a devotee of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Not just a devotee, he submitted himself into Chaitanya’s philosophy.
On entering the cemetery, one can see the main entrance with a high brick masonry and iron gate. “Bhakta Chandkaji Samadhi” is written in large letters at the main entrance. Srila Prabhupada undertook this place.
An inscription is found in Chand Kaji’s tomb. The following lines are engraved on it. But somewhat unclear –
“Shri Krishna Chaitanya karunara punyadhara bistare sansare
Mahamantra nama Sankirtana dhvani Shruti jivatu sanchare”
Translation: Shri Krishna Chaitanya spreads the divine flow of His mercy throughout the world. And He propagated the Nama Sankirtana. Chanting and hearing the holy names are the utmost goal of every living soul.
Swananda-Sukhada Kunja (Sri Godruma Dham, Nadia)
This place is situated on the banks of river Saraswati. This place was very dear to Srila Bhaktivinoda. He used this place to do bhajana. The bhajana kutira of Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaj is present here. Kshetrapala Shiva (protector of the pilgrimage) is situated at the entrance of this kunja. Thkura’s bhajana griha (room for bhajana) is in the middle and Pushpa Samadhi temple is situated on one side. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura disappeared at Sri Bhakti Bhavan in Calcutta on 23rd June 1914 AD. Srila Prabhupada established Thakura’s pushpa samadhi on 27th December 1914 AD and arranged for daily Puja and offerings. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s deity and his worshippable Gaura Gadadhara and Sriradha Govinda are worshipped daily in this samadhi temple. Next to this temple there is the samadhi of Sripad Krishnadas Babaji Maharaj, Srila Thakura’s attendant. There are his library and used objects in Srila Thakura’s bhajana mandir.
Suvarna Vihara Gaudiya Math (Sri Godruma Dham, Nadia)
Suvarna Vihara is located in the island of Sri Godruma on the other side of the river Jalangi, slightly to the east of Sridham Mayapur. This place is known as the palace of king Suvarna Sena. He received the mercy of Lord Gauranga by the favour of Narada in Satya Yuga. Srila Prabhupada On Sri Goura Panchami Tithi, Monday 25th May, 1936 A.D, inaugurated a new temple here and installed new deities. The name of the deities are Sri Sri Suvarnavihari Gourahari and Sri Sri Radha Govinda.
12) Gaura-Gadadhara Math (Champahati, Samudragarh)
Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s intimate associate Sri Gadadhara Pandita Goswami Prabhu’s disciple Dvija Baninatha served the deities of Sri Gaura and Gadadhara in this Champahati village. Due to the influence of time, this Sripata lost from the eye of common people. During the Navadvipa parikrama in 1920 AD, Srila Prabhupada noticed this endangered Sripata. He strives to restore this lost seva tradition. Within a few days, with the utmost efforts of Srila Prabhupada, the property was registered (Registry) in the name of Sri Chaitanya Math. Presently the seva of Sri Gaura-Gadadhara is going smoothly in this temple.
13) Sri Sarvabhauma Gaudiya Math
This place is located in Vidyanagar Ganganandpur under Jahnu Dvipa. Sriman Mahaprabhu’s associate Sri Vasudeva Sarvabhauma or Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya had his house at this place. In this house Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada established the Math on 5 March 1936 AD and installed the deity of Sri Sri Gaura and Gandharvika Giridhari here.
Sri Modadruma Gaudiya Math and Modadruma Chhatra (Modadruma Island or Mamgachi)
Modadruma Dvipa or Mamgachi, is the place where Srila Vrindavan Dasa Thakura appeared. This was the residence of Malinidevi’s father. Srila Vrindavan Dasa Thakura was the Vyasa of Chaitanya Lila i.e. he penned down all the pastimes of Mahaprabhu. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada restored this Sripat in 1921 AD and installed the deities of Sri Sri Gaura-Nityananda. He also installed a deity of Srila Vrindavan Dasa Thakura and arranged daily seva & puja.
During the winter of 1328 Bengali era, Srila Prabhupada collected some land. He built a chhatra (guest house) at this place for the accommodation of the pilgrims during Sri Navadvipa Dhama parikrama. This is called Modadruma Chhatra.
Sri Gaudiya Matha (Baghbazar, Kolkata)
In November 1918, Srila Prabhupada rented a house at No. 1 Ultadingi Junction Road, Calcutta for fifty rupees per month. There he established “Bhaktivinoda-asana” there. Later on 5th October 1930 AD “Bhaktivinoda-asana” was named “Sri Gaudiya Matha”. From this time, this Bagbazar Gaudiya Matha came to be known as the headquarter of the Gaudiya Mission. At this place Srila Prabhupada installed the deities of Sri Sri Guru Gauranga and Radha Vinodanananda and started daily seva. An English bi-monthly, “Harmonist” and a weekly, “Gaudiya” were published from this Matha.
Sri Kunja Kutira Math (Krishnanagar)
On Sunday, March 30, 1929, Srila Prabhupada along with his associates arrived in Krishnanagar from Mayapur. In the town hall of Krishnanagar (headquarter of Nadia district) he arranged a seminar. There he gave a spiritual discourse that won the hearts of the residents of Krishnanagar. This lecture influenced them towards devotional practices under Srila Prabhupada’s guidance. The next day on 31st March Prabhupada inaugurated a newly built beautiful Math at Belledanga Mor and named Sri Kunja Kutira Math. In this Math Srila Prabhupada installed the deties of “Sri Gaur-Radha Giridhari”. Bhagvata Press (printing machine) was set up at this place in 1915 AD by him.
