Pranam Mantra of Lord Shri Krishna
Hae krishna karuna-sindho, dina-bandho jagat-pate.
gopesa gopika-kanta, radha-kanta namo’stu te.
Meaning of the mantra:
O my dear Krishna, ocean of mercy, You are the friend of the distressed and the source of creation.
You are the master of the cowherdmen and the lover of the gopis, especially Radharani. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.
Lord Krishna is omnipotent and self-sufficient. He is the son of King Nanda and is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The entire universe is ruled by his will. The pastimes of Shri Krishna are divided into two main categories: Transcendental Pastimes & creation. He executes these pastimes by Himself and through His potencies. Shri Krishna fulfills His desires through His potencies. Shri Krishna has innumerable potencies. Among them, three are fundamental: 1) Iccha Shakti (potency of will), 2) Jnana Shakti (potency of knowledge) 3) Kriya Shakti (potency of creation). Krishna’s Iccha Shakti is used by Him to desire. His Jnana Shakti is used by Him to ascertain and His Kriya Shakti is used for execution.
In the chapter “Sanatana Shiksha” (Teachings to Sanatana Goswami),
Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya, 20.252-255,
Srila Krishna das Kaviraja Goswami writes:
ananta-śakti-madhye kṛṣṇera tina śakti pradhāna
‘icchā-śakti’, ‘jñāna-śakti’, ‘kriyā-śakti’ nāma
“Kṛṣṇa has unlimited potencies, out of which three are chief — willpower, the power of knowledge, and the creative energy.
icchā-śakti-pradhāna kṛṣṇa — icchāya sarva-kartā
jñāna-śakti-pradhāna vāsudeva adhiṣṭhātā
“The predominator of the willing potency is Lord Kṛṣṇa, for by His supreme will everything comes into existence.
In willing, there is a need for knowledge, and that knowledge is expressed through Vāsudeva”
Among Shri Krishna’s potencies, His power of will is chief. He desires to make Jivas (individual spirit souls) experience the consequences of their prarabdha (past actions) as well as to promote their innate eternal form through bhajan. The controller of citta is Vasudeva. He is the predominant deity of Jnana (knowledge). The inquisitive nature of the mind is called citta. As soon as the desire for creation appears in the mind of Shri Krishna, Vasudeva investigates the means of it through His knowledge. After that, Vaikuntha manifests and the material universes are created with the potency of action by Sankarshana, the presiding deity of ahankara tattva (identity). Therefore, the universe is created through these three forces of Sri Krishna.
Mahaprabhu Himself said to Sanatana:
kṛṣṇera svarūpa-vicāra śuna, sanātana
advaya-jñāna-tattva, vraje vrajendra-nandana
“O Sanātana, please hear about the eternal form of Lord Kṛṣṇa. He is the Absolute Truth,
devoid of duality but present in Vṛndāvana as the son of Nanda Mahārāja.”
sarva-ādi, sarva-aṁśī, kiśora-śekhara
cid-ānanda-deha, sarvāśraya, sarveśvara
“Kṛṣṇa is the original source of everything and the sum total of everything. He appears as the supreme youth
and His whole body is composed of spiritual bliss. He is the shelter of everything and master of everyone.”
svayaṁ bhagavān kṛṣṇa, ‘govinda’ para nāma
sarvaiśvarya-pūrṇa yāṅra goloka — nitya-dhāma
“The original Supreme Personality of Godhead is Kṛṣṇa. His original name is Govinda. He is full of all opulence,
and His eternal abode is known as Goloka Vṛndāvana.”
Shri Kṛṣṇa, The son of Nanda Mahārāja, is the absolute non-dual truth. No one is equal or superior to Him. There is no difference between Him and His body. He is beyond svajatiya, vijatiya and svagata bheda. Any one of His organs can act as any other of His organs. He is dependent on nothing and nobody. He is ever-youthful. His form is made of eternal knowledge and bliss. He is The Absolute Non-dual Truth and the Supreme Shelter of everybody.
When Lord Krishna Appears in This Material World
Srimad Bhagavad Gita (4.7) says:
yadā yadā hi dharmasya, glānir bhavati bhārata
abhyutthānam adharmasya, tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham
“Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata,
and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I manifest Myself and descend.”
But Lord Shri Krishna does not descend in every age. He descends through His purushavatara (Maha Vishnu incarnations), lilavatara (pastime incarnations), yugavatara (incarnations of a particular era), gunavatara (incarnations of the qualitative modes of nature), shaktyavesha avatara (empowered incarnations) and manvantara avatara (incarnations of the ‘Manus’).
In the mundane world, Svayam Bhagavan Sri Krishna appears only once in a day of Brahma. Chaitanya Charitamrita says: that the four yugas; Satya, Treta, Dvapara & Kali are called as one Divya Yuga (divine era) or caturyuga. 71 chaturyugas make one manvantara and 14 manvantara make one day of Brahma. Svayam Bhagavan comes once during this period. But within these one thousand Divya chaturyuga or four thousand yugas, four thousand yugavataras appear. There are 14 manvantaras in one day of Brahma and 71 chaturyugas in one manvantara. Then in which Yuga of which chaturyuga of which manvantara, does Shri Krishna appear? He appears in the Dvapara Yuga of the twenty-eighth chaturyuga of the seventh manvantara named Vaivasvata.
Chaitanya Charitamrita says:
vaivasvata’-nāma ei saptama manv-antara
sātāiśa catur-yuga tāhāra antara
“The present Manu, who is the seventh, is called Vaivasvata [the son of Vivasvān].
Twenty-seven divya-yugas [27 × 4,320,000 solar years] of his age have now passed.”
aṣṭāviṁśa catur-yuge dvāparera śeṣe
vrajera sahite haya kṛṣṇera prakāśe
“At the end of the Dvāpara-yuga of the twenty-eighth divya-yuga, Lord Kṛṣṇa appears on earth
with the full paraphernalia of His eternal Vraja-dhāma.”
The current age is counted as the twenty-eighth chaturyuga of the seventh Manu, which is called Vaivasvata. In this Treta Yuga, maryada- purushottam Ramachandra, in Dvapara lila-purushottam Sri Krishna and in Kali, prema-purushottam Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu have appeared.
Reason for the Divine Appearance of Shri Krishna:
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna Himself says that His birth and actions are transcendental. Those who know this fact truly, enter into the spiritual abode forever. Therefore he does not take birth in this material world again. The Supreme Lord does not take birth like a common soul. Common human beings are confined to karmik reactions. A common human being takes birth and changes his body as a result of his past actions. But the birth of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is discussed in Bhagavad Gita, chapter 2. It says Bhagavan appears due to His own free will.
Glorification by Vasudeva and Devaki:
“My Lord, I know that You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead. You are the Supersoul of all living entities and the Absolute Truth. You have appeared in Your own eternal form which I can see directly. I can understand that You have appeared to deliver us as we are afraid of Kamsa. You are beyond this material nature. You are that Supreme being who generates this universe by looking at Maya. My Lord, despite being the Supreme controller, You have appeared as my son out of mercy. You have descended to kill the demoniac Kamsa and his mischievous associates who are ruling this planet as emperors. I am sure that You must kill them. As soon as Kamsa came to know about this fact, he killed Your elder siblings. Now he is eagerly waiting for Your birth. As soon as he gets the news, he will rush here with arms.”
The Lord Instructs Vasudeva:
The Lord instructed Vasudeva to take His child form to Mother Yashoda at Gokul and bring her newborn girl child to Devaki.
Demons delivered by Lord Krishna in Vrindavan :
- Killing of Trnavarta:
- Killing of Vatsasura & Vakasura:
- Killing of Keshi:
- Killing of Aghasura:
- Punishment to Kaliya serpent:
Krishna’s Role in the Battle of Kurukshetra:
- He worked three times as a messenger to prevent the war.
- When both of the opponents begged His help, He gave a one hundred million soldier indomitable “Narayani” army to Duryodhana and became a mere chariot driver of Arjuna Himself.
- Before this battle, He proposed a peace treaty on behalf of the Pandavas. But the Kauravas refused it and the peace treaty was canceled.
- The advice delivered by Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra is called Bhagavad Gita.
- In the war, He instructed Yudhisthira to tell a lie and Bhima to crush the thigh of Duryodhana in an “illegal” move.
- He took a vow to not participate in any of the two sides, but He joined the Pandavas during the war. Actually, the Pandavas won with the help of Krishna.
Some of Krishna’s actions which helped the Pandavas are:
- On the third day of the war, Krishna attacked Bhishma with His Sudarshana. At last, due to Bhishma’s humility and Arjuna’s advice, Krishna stopped this attack.
- He nullified the Vaishnavastra weapon of Bhagadutta and saved Arjuna.
- He helped kill Jayadratha, Karna, and Drona. Ashwatthama killed Uttara’s child, Parikshit, while he was in the womb of his mother. Krishna brought him back to life.
- During the illegal fight between Bhima and Duryodhana, Krishna supported Bhima.
- At the end of the battle, Gandhari cursed Him as He did not stop the internal family war in spite of being capable. She cursed Him to ‘die’ an accidental ‘death’ after witnessing the destruction of His entire family.
Final Pastimes of Krishna:
After the Kurukshetra battle, Krishna returned to Dvaraka. He came to Hastinapur for Yudhisthira’s Ashwamedha Yajna but soon returned to Dvarka again. Once Vishwamitra, Kanva,

Therefore he does not take birth in this material world anymore.
Sri Krishna appears in the prison cell of Kamsa:
When the moment of Sri Krishna’s appearance came closer, the time became all auspicious and magnificent. The earth also became blissful. Tithi, yoga & nakshatra possessed their respective highest places. Meanwhile, Lord Shri Krishna manifested Himself as a four-handed Vishnu before Devaki and Vasudev.
King Vasudeva & Devaki Devi were stunned seeing Bhagavan :
Vasudeva looked at the child and was astonished. The child had four hands. In those hands, He was holding Shankha (conch), chakra (disk), gada (club) and lotus. There were Srivatsa marks on His chest and Kaustubha jewels were attached to the necklace around His neck. On the head, He is wearing a yellow outfit. He has the complexion of a bright raincloud. The crown on His head is bedecked with cymophane and other gemstones. He has beautiful curly hair. Vasudeva was very surprised to see this special child. He thought how can a newborn child put on these ornaments? Therefore he understood that Shri Krishna Himself appeared as his son. He astonished. He thought people usually celebrate when a son takes birth. Now the supreme personality of Godhead Himself appeared as my son. How big a celebration should be arranged! Vasudeva became free from the fear of Kamsa. The entire cell was filled with the radiance of the child. Maharaj Vasudev and Devaki Devi hailed the Lord.
Glorification by Vasudev and Devaki:
“My Lord, I know that You are the supreme personality of Godhead. You are the Supersoul of all living entities and the absolute truth. You have appeared in Your eternal form which I can see directly. I can understand that You have appeared to deliver us as we are afraid of Kamsa. You are beyond of this material nature. You are that supreme being who generates this universe by looking at Maya. My Lord, despite being the supreme controller, You have appeared as my son out of mercy. You have descended to kill demoniac Kamsa and his mischievous associates who are ruling this planet as emperors. I am sure that You must kill them. As soon as Kamsa came to know about this fact, he killed Your elder brothers. Now he is eagerly waiting for Your birth. As soon as he gets the news, he will rush here with arms.
The Lord Himself discloses the past identities of Devaki & Vasudev and explains why he has appeared:
Mother Devaki also offered prayers to the Lord. Hearing her plea, the Lord said, “My mother, during the reign of Svayambhuva Manu, my father Vasudev was Prajapati Sutapa. You were his wife. Your name was Prshni. Once Brahma asked both of you to have children to increase the population. You were engaged in severe austerities through self-restraint then. Both of you performed intense austerities for the 12000 Deva era. You have suffered from the rain of monsoon, the scorching heat of summer, storms, and wind. Both of your hearts got cleansed through penance and became free from the modes of material nature. Throughout these days you used to consume Only dry fallen leaves and meditated on Me by controlling all external senses. At that time your minds were absorbed in My thoughts. These made Me pleased upon you. I appeared before you in this same form. I asked you, “What is your wish?” You replied that you wanted Me as your son. You saw Me directly but did not ask me to deliver you from the control of Maya. You just wanted Me as your son.”
In this way, the Lord made a conversation with Vasudeva and Devaki. Then He converted Himself as a newborn little child.
The Lord instructs Vasudev:
The Lord instructed Vasudev to take His child form to Mother Yashoda at Gokul and bring her newborn girl child here.
Vasudev departs for Gokul:
Being instructed by Lord Shri Krishna, Vasudev got ready to take the child to Gokul. At the same time new girl of Nanda Maharaj and his wife Yashoda was born. She was the intrinsic energy of the Lord, Yogamaya. Under the influence of Yogamaya, the gatekeepers of Kamsa’s jail cell into asleep and the gates opened automatically. The night was extremely dark. It was raining and lightning. While Vasudev was passing through the rain carrying Shri Krishna with him, Lord Ananta expanded His hood over the head to protect Vasudev from rain. Vasudev reached the bank of the Yamuna River. He saw the turbulent river and its terrible foamy big waves. Despite having terrible waves, Yamuna madeva way for Vasudev. Vasudev Maharaj crossed the Yamuna and reached the opposite bank, Gokul. The house of Nanda Maharaj was there. He saw all the Gopas and Gopis had been in deep sleep. He took this advantage and entered into the room of Mother Yashoda. Then he placed his son and took the newborn child and returned to the cell of Kamsa. He put the girl in the lap of Devaki and chained himself so that Kamsa could not suspect.
Mahamaya deprives Kamsa:
Meanwhile, Kamsa was surprised after seeing a girl as the eighth child of Devaki. According to the oracle, Devaki should give birth to a male child. As soon as Kamsa tried to kill her by throwing her, the girl converted herself into an eight-handed Mahamaya. She informed Kamsa that his killer had been born already. Kamsa saw that it was impossible to detect his killer. Therefore he ordered to kill all newborn children of Mathura by a demon, Putana. No sooner had the children drunk Purana’s poisonous breast milk than they died. At last, Kamsa somehow came to know that Krishna was his enemy. After that Kamsa sent his mischievous monsters and demons in Vrindavan to kill Krishna.
Krishna’s role in the Kurukshetra battle:
- He worked three times as a messenger to prevent the war.
- When both of the opponents begged His help, He gave ten crore indomitable Narayani army to Duryodhana and Himself became a mere chariot driver of Arjuna.
- Before this battle, He proposed a peace treaty on behalf of the Pandavas. But Kauravas refused it and the peace treaty was cancelled.
- The advice delivered to Arjuna by Him in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, is called the Bhagavad Gita.
- In the war, He instructed Yudhisthira to tell a lie and Bhima to crash the thigh of Duryodhana in the illegal battle.
- He took a vow not to participate in any of the two parties. But He joined with Pandavas during the war. Pandavas won with the help of Krishna. Some of Krishna’s actions which helped Pandavas are:
- On the third day of the war, He attacked Bhishma with His Sudarshana. At last Bhishma’s humility and Arjuna’s advice stopped this conflict.
- He nullified the Vaishnavastra of Bhagadutta and saved Arjuna.
- He helped to kill Jayadratha, Karna, and Drona. Ashwatthama killed Uttara’s child, Parikshit, while he was in the womb of his mother.
Krishna revitalized him. - During the illegal fight between Bhima and Duryodhana, He supported Bhima.
- At the end of the battle, Gandhari cursed Him as He did not stop the internal family war in spite of being capable.
She cursed Him an accidental death after the end of His entire family.
Final days of Krishna:
After the Kurukshetra battle, He returned to Dwaraka. He came to Hastinapur for Yudhisthira’s Ashwamedha Yajna but returned to Dwarka soon. Once Vishwamitra, Kanva, and Narada went to Dwarka. Yadavas dressed Krishna’s son, Shamva as a pregnant woman and approached the wrishis. There they introduced him as the wife of Vabhru and queried the rishis to predict what is in the womb. As soon as the munis came to know his real identity, they became angry and cursed Shamva that he would give birth to an iron pestle and the entire Yadava clan would be destroyed due to this pestle. As the Munis cursed him, Shamva gave birth to an iron pestle. Yadavas threw the pestle to the sea. Seeing the inauspicious signs everywhere, Krishna asked the Yadavas to worship at the Prabhasa. Krishna, Balaram, and Ugrasen prohibited alcohol strictly in the city. But for one day of worship, the restriction was withdrawn. Yadavas consumed liquor excessively and engaged in fights against each other. Meanwhile, Satyaki being agitated beheaded Kritavarma. After that Satyaki and Krishna’s son Pradyumna died hitting one another with the wine vessels. After that Krishna took a handful of dust and all the grasses became pestles. Yadavas took the pestles, engaged in a fight against each other, and died.
Krishna and Balarama’s departure after the end of the Yadu clan:
After the destruction of the Yadu clan, Krishna and Balarama went to Prabhasa Kshetra. Before leaving Dwaraka, He sent His cart driver Daruka to Arjuna to convey the message. After entering the forest, He fixed His consciousness on yoga and lay in a secluded place. Meanwhile, Balarama disappeared from this world. At this time a hunter named Jara came there. He saw Krishna’s lotus feet and mistook it for a deer. He threw an arrow that stuck at Krishna’s foot. After that Krishna disappeared from this world. Arjun reached Dwaraka and performed the funeral rites of Yadavas.
